And then there were three
Last week while taking a shower, I was thinking about the fact that if someone asked me how many children I had, the answer would be "three".
Even though Bean is approaching 1 year, seemingly at light speed, I still find it surreal that I have three children. Fortunately for Bean, he is very much real and plays a huge 9kg role in all of our lives.
Lately, Daddy has been working tons and burning the midnight oil so hasn't been able to get much sleep, so the other night he went to sleep at about 5.30 and managed to make it right through the night... talk about seriously tired.
So I took little Bean into the lounge as he'd had an early evening nap and wasn't ready to hit the hay quite yet. And there he and I chilled. Which basically means that Bean played and I watched him, because any attempt to do something else (such as read my book) is met with swift intervention from said Bean. Since he'd already torn the bottom of one page, I gave up on reading and focused my attention on him.
It has been amazing to watch the progress he has made over the past few months. Even though there are no actual words past the prerequisite "Dadadada", "Mamama", and "Nononono", you can already hear the emergence of words and phrasing in his babbling. And when you speak to him, he speaks back demonstrating the turn-taking behaviour of a real conversation.
I sometimes wonder what he is trying to say, and what his thoughts are like. Does he think in words or sentences at all yet?
Or is it sounds and pictures?
Bean definitely understands some words. If I ask him where his duckie is.. he goes hunting for it. So I know he is starting to recognise words.
I once asked a deaf student how she thought, since hearing people think in the language/words we speak, and she said that she thought in signs and images.
I wonder how babies think?
